Introduction Vishnu Mudra
Certain pranayama methods call for respiration by one nostril at one time, with the other nostril gently held closed. Traditionally, one shuts down the nostrils using an extraordinary hand position known as Vishnu Mudra (Symbol of Vishnu).
Vishnu mudra is a hand posture practised during alternative nostril respiration exercises in yoga. It is titled in respect of Lord Vishnu, one among the main divinities in Hinduism. Sanskrit meaning of the word mudra stands for “seal” or “gesture.” Mudras can be symbolical, but in yoga, it is much believed to have a great impact on the mind and on a body by helping to clear up the energy channels, in addition to known as Nadis.
Benefits of Vishu Mudra
- This pranayama is believed to make a balance between the left and right sides of the brain.
- Likewise nadi shodhana calms down the mind for meditation, improve greatly in terms of concentration and brings down stress level.
Nadi shodhana, or alternative nostril respiration, is one and only the most natural pranayama respiration exercises in yoga, and Vishnu mudra makes up a fundamental component of this drill.
How to perform Vishu Mudra
Vishnu mudra is exercised with the right hand, which stands for receiving. To execute vishnu mudra, the index finger and middle finger are curled up in toward the palm, while the remaining three fingers remain straight extended.
Hold the tip of the right index finger and middle fingers and press it against the palm. Hold out the thumb and other two fingers.
close the left side of the nostril. To close down the left nostril, press out softly on it with the finger tips of the little finger and ring fingers.
close the right side of the nostril. To close down the right nostril, press out softly on it with the finger tip of the thumb.
In nadi shodhana with Vishnu mudra, the thumb and ring finger lie softly on either side of the nose. The yogi utilises his thumb finger to shut down the right side of the nostril as breathing in through the left side of the nostril. The thumb is then freed and the ring finger shuts down the left side of the nostril, therefore the yogi breathes out through the right nostril. To finish the cycle, the method is overturned with the breathe in through the right and breathe out through the left.
Precaution for Vishnu Mudra
If you feel awkward and uneasy to curl up the index finger and middle fingers to the palm, you are allowed to place the tips of those fingers which have to be used at the point between the eyebrows. The other fingers and thumb will be used as in standard Vishnu Mudra.
